Kanazawa

Introduction

I found myself visiting Japan again and wanted to go somewhere new. So Kanazawa naturally came to mind because I’ve heard great things about it. And Kanazawa was the perfect getaway! It wasn’t too crowded, easy to get around with just walking, and had lots of day trip options if you wanted to explore elsewhere.

To get to Kanazawa, you could take the Shinkansen or fly (which is what I did). I flew into Komatsu Airport, where you could either take an airport bus directly to Kanazawa Station (pay using a machine, then bring the ticket on board) or take a bus to Komatsu Station (pay using IC card) and then take the train to Kanazawa Station.

I chose to get around by walking since I felt like Kanazawa was incredibly walkable. However, you could also take the bus. The bus does NOT take your typical IC card but you can pay via contactless or cash.

Overall I would highly recommend visiting! Next time, I would definitely come towards the winter time.

food

  • Go Go Curry Kanazawa Station Main Shop - Even though the spot looks pretty inconspicuous within the train station, the chicken and pork katsu curry tasted amazing and it came very quickly. I would have eaten 5 of these, if I could.
  • Imai Kinpaku Main Store - Kanazawa is known for their gold leaves, so naturally I visited the gold store and tried their gold sheet ice cream. The ice cream was nothing special but it was cool to see the gold foil on the ice cream.
  • meal&bar 日々 kanazawa - This small restaurant was run by the most adorable woman. The lunch special (hibi home gozen) was absolutely amazing and tasty, and she even walked me through what each item was.
  • Sakakobo TAROU Onigawa Store
  • Moron Cafe - This cafe is near the samurai district and the interior is definitely very cute. I wanted to try their banana bread but they ran out. So I settled on a matcha kinako and carrot cake, which was also delicious!
  • Okina Sushi - This sushi spot was run by the most adorable old couple and the sushi set they served was tasty and super affordable. I got the upper sushi set and edamame which tasted amazing. Definitely go on the earlier side because when I left, the couple were turning people away.
  • Mizuhiki-tei - This spot is definitely on the pricier side for shabu shabu but the team there was absolutely amazing. I couldn’t walk in so I made a reservation for the next day. When I came, the team had already heated up the hot pot for me and had my seat ready. I got the set E, beef and pork which was incredibly tasty! The staff was also very friendly and easily one of the highlights of the trip.
  • 井ノ弥 - I was randomly strolling in Omicho Market, looking for kaisondon and this spot was definitely decent and had lots of options. I got a 10% discount (since I paid cash and queued in line before they opened, but I really just got in line 10min before they opened).
  • Kanazawa Niku Shokudo 100bangai Store - Also within Kanazawa Station, this spot runs a lunch special but you do have to wait a bit. So I would only come here if you have some time to kill. I got the 3 kinds of meat lunch special which was also super good for the price!

Attractions

  • Ishiura Shrine
  • Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art - some parts of the museum are free, which had some edgy art. I would recommend stopping by!
  • Higashi Chaya District - This is definitely the more touristy geisha district in the city, but it’s worth walking around since the buildings are interesting to see.
  • Nishi Chaya District
  • Hondamachi
  • Kaga Honda Museum
  • Omicho Market - There is so much food to try here that I kind of went overboard. I felt like the best time to go was in the AM, since that’s when most stalls are open. All the stalls serve very fresh seafood or related items, which is incredibly good!

Nature

  • Gyokusen-inmaru Garden
  • Kanazawa Castle Park - Walking around the park was probably one of the highlights of the trip. The grounds are beautiful and you don’t need to pay to get inside the park to really get the full experience. I also walked past Kenroku-en, which was a very beautiful garden!

Day trips

Yamanaka Onsen
Taking a day trip towards Yamanaka Onsen was easy since it's not too far from Kanazawa and could be done in half a day if needed! Overall, if you’re looking for a slower pace than what’s in Kanazawa, then this spot is for you.

To get here, you just need to take the train and then a local bus. Google Maps will give you directions that are pretty straightforward. When you take the bus, I recommend taking the bus all the way to the last stop and then setting your GPS towards the Korogi Bridge so you get the most out of the experience.

Start by walking to the Yamanakaza Tourist Information Center where you could actually pay to visit the onsen. Then slowly make your way through Yamanaka Onsen Yuge Street and look at all the wares for sale.

I would recommend setting your GPS to Kakusenkei Gorges, walking across the Korogi Bridge, walking up Hakusan Shrine and then going the other way around to Ayatori Bridge and crossing back into town. The views while walking are incredibly pretty so I would carve out time for this!

I had time to kill before the bus came, so I went to Izumiya Meat Shop where I got a really, really good chicken cutlet. Then, I stopped by 抹茶庵 山中店 to drink a mango matcha. And then, I put my foot in the foot onsen near the information center before I got back on the bus. Overall, you definitely don’t need a whole day here but I recommend at least carving out half a day.
Shirakawa-go
This is probably the most popular day trip from Kanazawa, where you may have seen the triangular houses! I would also recommend visiting but Shirakawa-go is honestly pretty small. You could see everything in a few hours. I used this link to roughly plan my trip.

There is no rail link here so you'll have to take the bus. Apparently tickets (buy them here) ran out quickly but I was able to get a ticket the day before for the next day. I would recommend getting a round trip ticket since you don't want to be stuck (but also I had a flight to catch). I felt 2-3 hours was plenty to get the full experience.

If you mark these places in your maps then you'll see everything. I would recommend that you let yourself walk around and get lost since that's the best way to see the houses! You can pay to get inside some of the houses but I didn't think it was worth the money.

  • Kanda House
  • Nagase House
  • Wada House
  • Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck
  • Shiroyama Tenshukaku Observation Deck
  • Shirakawagō Seseragi Park Parking Lot.
  • Deai Bridge
  • Shirakawa-go Gassho-Zukuri Minka-en
  • Shirakawago Three Houses
