Introduction

I was trying to think of where I wanted to do a long layover and Missoula came to mind since I've always wanted to visit Montana. So, I was able to string a half day together. Even though I only had limited time, it was worth the trip! I would definitely visit again for longer.

I did all the things below in a little over half a day, but you could really stretch this into a whole day if needed! Overall, the nature here was so beautiful and I would 100% recommend visiting. ​

Attractions
  • Rockin Rudy's - This shop has the wackiest stuff with a bunch of records, little trinkets, etc. where I feel like you could easily spend all day here. It's definitely an interesting part of Missoula culture and I would definitely recommend visiting!

Food
  • Black Coffee Roasting Company - Super cute coffee shop that is airy enough to have a conversation / work remotely but not too small where you feel noticed.
  • Paul’s Pancake Parlor - This spot serves very big and interesting pancakes, like sourdough. I wasn't a fan of the sourdough, but all the pancakes were pretty good!

Nature
  • Waterworks Hill - This is a nice easy hike where you can do it as an out and back, or as a loop. I did this as a morning run which was perfect, even in cold weather. You get some nice views as well!
  • The M - Your legs will feel the pain as you go across each switchback, but the hike itself is not hard and easily paved. You get an amazing view of Missoula downtown and the university, so I highly recommend this hike!
  • Bluebird Preserve Trail - This hike was also incredibly pretty, less so on the views but more so where it's only a ~10min drive from the city but you feel like you're completely isolated. Overall I really liked this hike too!​
