San Juan

Introduction

During the cold New York winter, I desperately craved for warmth. So I thought, what better way to find the sun than to travel elsewhere? I've always wanted to visit Puerto Rico, so I thought this would be the perfect chance to take an impromptu trip.

I'm glad that I visited because I thought PR was a cross between Waikiki in Honolulu and Miami. The beaches are in close proximity, and the flight isn't too far from NYC. It was nice and sunny, and even though I was only there for 2 days I definitely would recommend as a quick getaway and would come back again! I wanted to do more but didn't get the chance.

Uber is relatively affordable in San Juan, but there is also a robust bus system. I did find the buses to be somewhat unreliable, since the buses didn't come at the exact time shown on Google Maps. As of Feb 2025, the buses were actually free to use (I think it's because they are overhauling their payment system, as I saw on a website). It's usually $0.75 so I kept some quarters on me, just in case.

If you're going elsewhere on the island, I would recommend renting a car since it didn't seem like San Juan was walkable besides the area near the beach and the old town. However, I'll be back soon!

places i visited

Beaches
I would recommend all the beaches, but I liked Isla Verde Beach the most. It had more of a local feel and was further away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
  • Condado Beach
  • Atlantic Beach
  • Isla Verde Beach

Old San Juan
All of these places are walkable within a 30min radius of each other.
  • Castillo San Felipe del Morro
  • San Juan National Historic Site
  • Paseo del Morro - I recommend walking on this trail along the water to the natural historical site!
  • Puerta de San Juan
  • La Fortaleza
  • Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan Bautista
  • Capilla del Santos Cristo de la Salud
  • Paseo de la Princesa
  • C. de la Fortaleza
  • Castillo San Cristobal
  • Plaza Colon

Food
  • La Cueva Del Mar - I got the arroces de la casa and the fish tacos. If you go on a Tuesday the fish tacos were only 2 for $7, which is what I wish I got more of.
  • Bebo's Cafe - I got the mofongo relleno con pollo and a fruit punch, which was also tasty!
  • El Jibarito - I got the plantain tamale with pork and a pina colada. The tamale was good but small, but the pina colada was amazing.
