Bangkok

Introduction

I was excited to visit Bangkok since it’s been on my bucket list for ages! I only had a day in the city, so I jumped on the opportunity to visit. I would highly recommend going and I’m already planning my next trip back where I can hope to stay longer. I loved the food and the hustle & bustle of the city. It was easy to get around - the easiest way to get from the airport to the city center is using the Airport Rail Link. However, if your flight gets in too late, you’ll have to call a Grab. If you’re going to be in Bangkok a little longer, I would recommend getting the Rabbit Card, which is the city’s public transportation card. I found the city’s metro pretty reliable but there are also lots of tuk-tuks! I didn’t have the chance to take them but I would recommend downloading a tuk-tuk app so you don’t get scammed.

However, I felt like it was easier to use cash to pay. If you get on the bus, you’ll have to tell the attendant where you’re going since the fare is distance based. I don’t know Thai so I just showed my Google Maps screen to the attendant. I would also be sure to get small change, since it’s relatively cheap. However, the bus was incredibly unreliable since Google Maps would say the bus is arriving, but it wouldn’t arrive.

I would also make sure to avoid anyone that randomly approaches you, especially near the touristy spots. I felt like a lot of people wanted you to get in their tuk-tuks, but it could be a scam. And also, make sure you wear long pants if you’re going to a temple. But otherwise, enjoy your time!

food

  • Riverside Cafe - this place is right next to the ferry to Wat Arun and I found their tom yum to be pretty good.
  • Luk Hostel’s cafe
  • The One Ratchada - this night market was kind of dead, but it might be because we went during a weekday. Overall the food here felt more expensive than elsewhere.
  • The Camping Ground - I loved the vibe of this “food court” spot. It’s not really a night market but more like a “smorgasbord” in terms of what you would see in the States. Lots of good options to choose from, and I would highly recommend it.
  • AV Izakaya @ Saphan Khwai - this spot is a super interesting izakaya that is kind of “PG-13”. They have a penis-shaped sweet bread which was interesting, along with all sorts of foods that are what you would expect from an izakaya.

Attractions

  • The Grand Palace - the building looks magnificent, but make sure you wear long pants due to the dress code. We didn’t go inside the palace but do keep an eye out for hustlers trying to get you elsewhere or sell you pants.
  • Wat Pho - Pretty cool temple with The Reclining Buddha.
  • Wat Arun - this temple/area probably had the most things to see in terms of square footage and made for a good photo opp. You’ll see lots of people dressed up taking pictures!
